After reading several stories of gas struts failing pretty miserably, I elected to keep it simple and have a single strut to hold up the hatch. The bottom fits into a sort of mortise socket and the top has a pin that slides into a hole in a block of cherry. I decided to get creative and did some chamfered edges and carved a requested otter on one side and a duck on the other. I'm pretty happy with the results, although the duck does look a bit strange on its side. Oh well, functionality before aesthetics and all that.
